It has been a busy few weeks for participants from across our Chance to Shine Street programme. On Wednesday 31st July, 7 teams of boys and girls from Leicester travelled to Nottingham for the Chance to Shine Street Finals Day, supported by NatWest. Teams from across the Country were in attendance and the 200+ participants were even treated to a visit from three of England’s World Cup winners; Liam Plunkett, Tom Curran and Alex Hartley. The England stars took part in a Q&A about their cricket experiences and then delivered batting and bowling masterclasses to the young cricketers, providing some last-minute tips before the all important matches.
Leicester were represented in the boys U12 and U15 categories, with the U12s remaining unbeaten in their group before narrowly missing out on a semi-final spot. It was a great day for the girls teams who were taking part in the first ever Girls Street National Finals. Leicester had 2 teams competing in the U12 competition and 3 teams in the U16 competition, with the Leicester Strikers running out inaugural winners of the U16 category! An unforgettable experience was had by all participants on the day, getting to play cricket against young people from across the country and interact with some of their cricketing heroes.
The following week, on Wednesday 7th August, participants from Birmingham’s Chance to Shine Street projects joined participants from Leicester to attend the Vitality Blast fixture between the Bears and the Foxes at the Fischer County Ground. Over 80 Street participants were in attendance to take part in the Matchday Experience, which involved providing the guard of honour for the players, an interval lap of the pitch and the opportunity to meet the players at the end. The participants were treated to a fantastic game, and witnessed Foxes captain Colin Ackermann take the best T20 bowling figures (7 for 18) in the world! One Leicester participant was also the lucky recipient of the Fan of the Match award, earning himself two tickets to the Vitality Blast Finals Day. Another great experience for young people from the Chance to Shine Street programme that won’t be forgotten in a hurry.
