Children from 5 SEN schools took part in an outdoor festival at Syston Town CC on Tuesday 29th May 2012. The festival which had to be re-arranged due to rain in the early part of the season provided an opportunity for children with learning disabilities to visit a community club and take part in some fun skills and games. The day was organised by Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket and club volunteers as a launch pad for the inclusive section the club are trying to develop.
The club coaches attended an Inclusive coaching course which gave them the tools and skills to help work with the disabled participants and run the day. The Club sponsor Bill Mitchell of MSD attended the festival. Bill is keen for the club to develop this inclusive section and will be funding shirts for any disabled people who become members so they feel included and part of the club.
Birkett House, Maplewell Hall, Nether Hall, Ellesmere and Birch Wood schools arrived at the ground where they were made to feel welcome by club volunteers and L&RC staff. The schools made their way around a circuit of fun skills before taking part in some continuous cricket following lunch.
The coaching was also supported by former Leicestershire CCC and England player Paul Nixon who had plenty of energy and tips for the children taking part. All of the children were presented with a Syston Town CC medal at the end of the day and were provided with details of the inclusive training sessions the club are running. There was also plenty of time for photo’s and autographs with Paul Nixon.
Louise Woodman of Maplewell Hall said
