Hinckley Rhinos were crowned winners of the NatWest Club U19 T20 at the Fischer County Ground in their final against Soar Valley Stollers on Sunday, September 4. This was the pinnacle of a thrilling competition where the two sides, who had seen off their opposition in the semi-finals, faced off in some exciting youth T20 cricket.
The competition ethos is built on keeping young cricketers playing by making the game more inspiring by being closely aligned with the professional T20 Blast. The final certainly encapsulated this with both sides being well supported with family members and local people coming to watch, this along with the music and PA announcements made for an exciting occasion which most of the young players hadn’t experienced before.
After a slow start with opener Asad Pathan dismissed for 0, Rhinos batsmen Jagril Lalli (37) and Ben Coddington (45) dug in to set the platform for a competitive target. However some tight bowling late on from Monik Patel (3-8) meant Soar Valley were set a total of 99 to win.
Despite getting off to a good start with opener Mahang Patel reaching 35 the match came down to the final over in which Soar Valley required 15 runs to win. Some tight bowling and sharp fielding from Hinckley meant they were crowned the 2016 Leicestershire NatWest Club U19 T20 champions, winning comfortably in the end by 9 runs.
