Leicestershire Vixens took on Loughborough Students Women at the university’s Haselgrave ground, eventually winning by 3 wickets.
In what is the Vixens only pre-season friendly before they take on Nottinghamshire in May, captain Harriet Leach won the toss and elected to bowl.
Leicestershire used this pre-season opportunity to pick a squad of 13 and give 11 bowlers a run out and hand debuts to Mira Patel and Amna Rafiq. The pick of the bowling included 3 wickets a piece for Georgia Relf and Mira Patel, and very economical bowling from Una Paramjothy (1-10), Lucy Higham (1-9) and Collette Wale (1-5).
LSWCC were bowled out for 150, captain Marie Kelly top scoring with a fluent 72, but continued to bat to give both bowlers and batters more practice in the middle. The innings ended in the 47th over when the 13th wicket fell on 188.
The Vixens reply did not get off to the best start, losing Leach and Midwood with just 6 runs on the board. Katie Winterton and Lucy Higham (25) steadied the ship with a 65 run partnership. When Higham fell, Niki Patel (12) continued to support Winterton who fell for 53 with just 16 runs required. A succession of wickets left the Vixens 7 down with 6 to win, but Emily Starr (13) and Collette Wale saw their side home in the 47th over.
Many thanks to Loughborough for hosting us, and to Will Relf and his groundstaff who got the game on after some pretty awful rain the days before.
The Leicestershire Vixens will next play Nottinghamshire (1st May at Welbeck CC) and Wales (2nd May at Empingham CC).
