Houghton & Thurnby Secure Second U19 T20 win in Three Years

Houghton & Thurnby become the NatWest U19 T20 Blast Leicestershire and Rutland champions with a resounding 43 run win against Soar Valley Strollers at Rothley Park Cricket Club.

Finals day was hosted by Rothley Park Cricket Club and Sileby Town Cricket Club with semi finals taking place between Barkby United v Houghton & Thurnby and Sileby Vikings v Soar Valley Strollers.

In the first Semi Final at Rothley Park, Soar Valley Strollers knocked off a competitive 150 posted by Sileby Town CC and in the other semi final at Sileby Town, Houghton & Thurnby knocked off the 106 despite being 12-3.

In the final, Houghton & Thurnby won the toss and elected to bat on an extremely cold and blustery afternoon at Rothley Park.

Dan Scudamore got Houghton & Thurnby off to a fantastic start hitting 46, despite losing three wickets cheaply which could have left Houghton & Thurnby in trouble, Robbie Spencer hit a terrific half century which included three big sixes which led the recovery. He was ably supported by Jack Beal and Salman Mir with posted handy contributions. Jaan Shafi was the pick of the bowlers with 3-26 from 4 overs. At the halfway stage, 164-5 was a very competitive score in tough bowling and fielding conditions.

In reply, Soar Valley Strollers lost both openers cheaply to opening bowler Seb Pierson. Vijul Vinay offered stern resistance hitting three sixes before he was bowled for 44. Dan Scudamore bowled a tight spell and picked up the crucial wicket of Vinay. Ajay Khunti took two further wickets to leave Soar Valley in trouble at 66-6. The innings never recovered with Soar Valley Strollers finishing on 121-8. Houghton & Thurnby went onto lift the trophy for the second time in three years.

A huge thanks goes to the hosts of the finals day Rothley Park Cricket and Sileby Town Cricket Club, the umpires; Kevin Smyth, Andy Smith, Rob Moorhouse and Chris Johnson and to Sam Rowe and his wife for arranging the catering.
