The Leicestershire Vixens have a lot to be pleased about after coming away with two wins from two on a scorching bank holiday weekend.
The two victories, against Staffordshire on Sunday and Shropshire on Monday, see the Vixens sit top of the table after the first round of fixtures. Playing in the ECB Championship Division 3, the promotion bid has well and truly got off to the best start.
Sunday’s game, at Quorn Plaing Fields against recently demoted Staffordshire, saw captain Niki Patel win an important toss putting the opposition in on a slow wicket and equally slow outfield. The bowling attack kept things extremely tight throughout the innings, with Staffordshire especially tied down by the 3 pronged spin attack of Patel, Leach and Relf. However there were wickets for debutants Rebecca Brazier (1-9) and Isobel Barnes (2-25), as Staffordshire ended their innings on 153-6 from their 50 overs. In reply Leicestershire were reduced to 61-4 until Una Paramjothy joined Patel at the crease and struck a brilliant 54 from 66 balls to contribute to their 70 run partnership. Despite losing a few wickets with just a few runs remaining, the Vixens eventually crossed the line in the 44th over. SCORECARD
Loughborough Town CC were hosts to the 2nd game of the weekend against Shropshire. This time the Vixens were put into bat and despite losing an early wicket, Katie Winterton and Patel shared an 89 run partnership. Once Winterton was out for a well made 40, Patel passed 50 but lacked support as wickets began to fall. However lower order runs from Jodie Masser (20) helped Leicestershire to 165 but could not stop them being bowled out in the 47th over. Once again the bowlers took to their task brilliantly, keeping Shropshire below the required run rate for much of the innings. Captain Niki Patel certainly led from the front, following her 50 she took 5-23 with her leg spin as pace off the ball once again helped pin the batters down. However going into the last 10 overs, Shropshire captain Lara Jones began to find the boundaries and threatened a comeback from 81-7, but openers Paramjothy (0-19 from 10 overs) and Brazier (3-22) returned to steady the ship and once Brazier had Jones (36) stumped brilliantly by Winterton the game was over with Shropshire finishing on 139-9. A very hard fought win for the Vixens in the stifling bank holiday heat! SCORECARD
