Leicestershire CCC have been nominated after doing lots of great engagement work in the local community.
This includes establishing an Interfaith tournament, holding a Diwali Street Cricket celebration, promoting girls cricket at Madani High School and setting up the Lightning League.
Our inaugural Interfaith Festival was held at Leicester Caribbean CC in the heart of inner city Leicester. It was designed to bring together Leicester’s Multifaith community and promote community cohesion through cricket.
A Diwali celebration at Leicester’s Cossington Street Sports centre saw three Leicester-born cricketers – Shiv Thakor, Jigar Naik and Samit Patel – lead a Chance to Shine Street Cricket session.
Sessions at Madani High School saw over 25 Muslim girls taking part in cricket for the first time, some of whom transitioned to Leicester Caribbean CC’s girls only sessions.
The Lightning League was the first girls league of its kind in Leicestershire and Rutland. Through our partnership with Kia Super League team Loughborough Lightning, the league’s Finals Day was held at Loughborough Lightning.
The BEDSAs are designed to recognise and celebrate the contributions made by black and minority ethnic communities. The Awards will help drive change in the sport sector where more role models from more communities in more sports are a priority to increase participation.
The recognition of hard work and dedication stimulates interest and unearths talent on and off the field of play.
